What time period are the Professor Layton games set in?

They don't really have a definite time period, but they are probably in modern times (despite the lack of cell phones and stuff) they have modernish cars so probably 1950 at the earlyest. It can't be 1950 because in Professor Layton and the lost future, the prime minister mentions that humans have conquered sea and land and even been in outer space but the first man in outer space was Yuri Gagarin in 1961, so it must be around the mid 1960's.
