If it's the correct season for an orchid to bloom, and it's not blooming when you think it should be, it may not be receiving enough light. A bright southern, or eastern window is a good location for most orchids. A western window is also good but be sure to protect plants from the hot late afternoon sun. Don't place an orchid in a dim location such as a coffee table in the middle of your living room. It needs to be close to the light source to get enough light.

Some orchids, such as phalaenopsis (moth orchids) like a night time temperature drop. Usually they prefer around 65 degrees at night and this can trigger them to begin their blooming cycle.

You need to make sure the flowers have plenty of sun and enough water. They need 1 inch of water a week but three inches when they start to flower. Pinch off buds in early July for full flowers in fall. Keep the plant away from street lights.

If you plant your chrysanthemums in the spring, they will rebloom in the spring. If you plant your chrysanthemum in the fall, it will not have time to build a root structure to survive the winter.
