You would be thinking of the famous Chevrolet El Camino, which was Chevy's answer to Ford's Ranchero. It was in 1957 when Ford brought the Ranchero (a Ranch Wagon with the cab sliced off) to the world, and two years later, Chevy joined the party with its Bel Air-modeled El Camino.

It was adapted from a 2 door station wagon but had a cargo bed. Unlike a pickup the body and bed were one unit. Chevrolet made a similar vehicle called the El Camino.
