How do you get espona on Legend of Zelda ocarina of time?

When you're a child, talk to the girl by the vines when you attempt sneaking into Hyrule Castle. Later at Lon-Lon ranch (you're still a child at this point), stand in front of Malon, and pull out the ocarina, she will then teach you "Epona's Song".

When you get older, go back to Lon-Lon ranch (make sure you have a lot of rupees). When you arrive, talk to Ingo. He will ask you if you want to ride the horses, when you get in the gates, play Epona's Song. Epona will then come to you. After riding around on her, go and talk to Ingo (this might not work the first time).

He will ask you to race with him; accept his challenge. This first race should be fairly easy. After beating Ingo, he'll freak out and say that Ganondorf will NOT be happy about this. He will then ask you to race again. If you win, you can keep the horse. The 2nd race will be harder. Use your carrots wisely. You will eventually beat him. It may take quite some tries though. It took me about 5 times...
