You go to level 3-1 and play till the end of the level when the Koopas fall down the stairs. Avoid the first Koopa and wait until the second Koopa is on the third step. Then jump on the Koopa before it leaves the third step and don't press any buttons but let Mario keep bouncing on the Koopa.
First you take your thumb, then you squat on a flat surface, and, finally, you jam your thumb up your hole.

in new super Mario bros. wii get 99 lives and when u get to the map (must still have 99 lives) Mario's hat will be off.
in my guide it said if you get 99 lives, Mario takes his hat off. lose your 99 lives and he puts it back on.
