You cannot buy gems without real money, but there are other ways to get them. You can send them to friends, and in return, they can send some to you as well.

Also, you can compete in the arena. This has the potential of winning 2 or 5 every 24 hours.

Breeding birthstone dragons also supplies gems. When the dragon reaches the top level, they will produce 1 gem per week. You can keep up to 12 birthstone dragons in the birth stone habitat.
