The most effective way is to freeze the gum with ice so that it is hard and no longer sticky, then chip or scrape it out. As long as the gum is sticky any attempt to remove it will only spread it.
I find that using a fork works really well. If you spray it with something first, then it might get goey and come up faster. Even a blow dryer on high heat will sometimes work (to get it goey if it's hardened). But yeah. A fork or a butter knife.
