There are three "tunnels" on the island:
1) The hot hatch - get the robot crab from the Living Quarters, and get Sprocket the robot from Sully's. Have Sprocket drop the crab on the hatch, and some water will spill out to cool the hatch.
2) The production zone - raise, then lower the wrecking ball to smash open the underground tunnel into the dome.
3) The annex - you need to complete the Mech, and use the weed whacker attachment to clear the vines from the entrance
