Best Answer

Take a small quantity of quicklime (CaO) in a beaker and add a small quantity of water into it. Quicklime reacts vigorously with water to form a suspension of slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) in water.

CaO + H2O = Ca(OH)2

Then leave the beaker containing slaked lime undisturbed for some time. After some time a clear solution is obtained as the suspension of slaked lime settles down. This clear solution is called lime water. Then take the lime water in a test tube and pass CO2 gas through it (or blow exhaled air into the lime water through a glass tube). The lime water turns milky. CO2 gas reacts with lime water to form a white precipitate of calcium carbonate. This white precipitate is called lime stone

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H2O

Can Limestone be used for the smell of a decompostion of a dead animal?

Lime (quicklime) is made from limestone- but it is not the same thing. Agricultural lime is powdered limestone. Quicklime is limestone (calcium carbonate) that has been roasted and changed to Calcium Oxide. Slaked quicklime is quicklime that has had water added- Calcium hydroxide. Quicklime is used for odor control.

How can you tell the difference between limestone and quicklime?

Quicklime reacts with water, limestone doesn't. That's probably the fastest way.

What is the purpose of limestone in the blast furnace?

The limestone decomposes to quicklime and carbon dioxide, and the quicklime removes acidic impurities (eg SiO2). So basically limestone is to remove impurities

What reaction takes place to produce quicklime?

Thermal Decomposition is the name of the reaction to produce quicklime from limestone.

Is quicklime a compound?

it is a compound i think because it says in my science book it is CaCO3 which are calcium and carbon and 3 oxygen

What is the chemical formula of quicklime?

The Chemical formula for lime is CaO. This comes from Limestone (CaCO3). As Limestone is heated up to 1000 degrees, it lets of Carbon Dioxide and becomes CaO, or quicklime.

What mass of quicklime can be made from 1 ton of limestone?

When limestone is heated does I become sandstone?

Once burnt limestone turns into calcium oxide which is known as quicklime.

What are the two reactions used to make calcium hydroxide from limestone?

Firstly, the limestone is heated to produce quicklime (calcium oxide - CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The a small amount of water (H2O) is added to the quicklime, to produce slaked lime (calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2). In conclusion: limestone quicklime + carbon dioxide quicklime + water → slaked lime I really hope that helped! :)

What chemicals does limestone breakdown to when heated?

calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon dioxide

What is the formula of creating quicklime from limestone?

quick lime is CaO and limestone is CaCO3 and the method to prepare limestone out of quick lime is just heat the limestone. CaCO3--------CaO + CO2 HEAT
