How do you get magical powers?

Magic or magick is not derived from one's body or mind but from spirits. That is why psychic abilities are often referred to as Gifts of the Spirit as opposed to Gifts of the Brain. The people who have Gifts of the Spirit, especially the more powerful gifts like utensil bending ability and being able to levitate and/or teleport small objects about: receive those energies from a community of people on the Other Side who are typically on the fourth plane - in the well-known seven plane paradigm.

A discarnate community is often referred to as a Group Entity. The reason why they receive their gifts typically from a fourth plane, yellow-energy Group Entity, is because that is the area of dimensions whereby one who is basically spiritual can easily and for long periods of time combine or unite one's consciousness into a gestalt or uni-mind with hundreds, even thousands of others in the Spirit; thereby granting the community in The Light the advantage of collective energies for small-scale telekinesis. A smaller number of discarnate communities are fifth plane violet-energy Group Entities. But by the time you hit the sixth plane as a lower echelon saint, one is focused on the path of slowly becoming a Light Unto Oneself ; these find that being part of a Group Entity below hinders their development. One cannot climb the highest mountain when one favors the comfort and security of being part of a congregation on a lower plane.

People who do have "magical powers" like Cyril Takayama, Ehud Segev, and David Blaine get those Gifts of the Spirit from their own yellow-energy Group Entity. Criss Angel did have that situation and more than the others - being the soul of Simon Magus or Simon the Sorcerer - but, like Sai Baba (although not necessarily the same way), abused his gifts and his GE consequently retrogressed. Resulting in his Gift of Chi-Telekinesis greatly weakening. According to various reports, he now resorts to mediocre stage illusion and trying to live off his former reputation.

Now to answer your question directly - How do you get magical powers? - you really have to orchestrate that in the Spirit before you incarnate into a body. You have to become very politically active in a discarnate community on the fourth plane and slowly convince them, as any incarnate politician does to get elected into office, to choose you as their main prophet and incarnate GE representative. So that when you are born again and slowly grow up, that yellow-energy Group Entity will slowly start to grant you various Gifts of the Spirit that were promised to you by them before birth.

Parapsychology and transpersonal psychology need to update their paradigm of understanding: the term "poltergeist" and the term "Group Entity" are in fact one and the same thing.

Having magical powers in the traditional sense is really a political achievement, not a spiritual accomplishment. Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, taught this spiritual truth. He knew a man who could manifest flowers and said that that was not indicative of spiritual attainment. Same idea. That is why, like politicians in the flesh, you find people for a time with Gifts of the Spirit who are not principled and who do not strive to live by The Golden Rule.

Group Entities deceive and manipulate people in the flesh constantly.

The hardest and highest path is to slowly become a Light Unto Oneself and eventually be able to telekinetically manifest individually what a Group Entity manifests collectively - and more - after one returns to The Light. This is the path of God Realization and most do not want to put in the years of sacrifice, selflessness, and spiritual discipline in order to achieve the soul evolution of becoming a lesser god and to also learn how to stay there. Despite the inherent difficulty and sacrifice, there are now various people around the world who are developing along those lines. They will become at least lesser gods after death. This is the path of Heart Chakra Radiance.
