How do you get past the bugs on Astro Knights Island?

There are no bugs on Astro Knights Island. There are two features mistaken for bugs.

The Phoenix Birds - On the jungle planet, you fly on the unicorn Pegasus while wielding the Laser Lance. The smaller "bee" birds are easy to destroy, but you can fire a power shot by clicking and holding while the Lance builds up energy. This can destroy several bee birds and the more powerful red torpedo birds. You have to shoot the Mother Phoenix three times (in the head) to beat it.

The Gas and Embers - In the volcano on the fire planet, a strong blast of superheated air and sparks is blowing intermittently -- it only stops for a few seconds at a time. You have to use those seconds to move from each safe location to the next one. There is time to make it to the very next place, but seldom more. You will eventually get past the exhaust chamber.
