Well, first you have to have a friend either on WFC or nearby for DS to DS. Either get them to open their gate or talk to Copper to get him to "Invite guests". When you have done all that, either say "I wanna go out" if your friend's gate is open, or wait until your friend arrives. As for getting past the gate, either go to a friend's town... or... cheat... But otherwise, you really can't go out the gate unless it's to another town.
