You don't have to get past it, as nothing's behind it. To defeat the Hydra, get close and let it attack you with one of its heads. Before it hits you, jump up and land on top of the head, knocking it out. Repeat this for the other four heads.
When you have defeated the Hydra, swim below it to get the scale.
