Best Answer

People will give you trust points when they, well, trust you. You can earn the trust of people in the community by giving good answers to questions and helping to categorize questions. When people read one of your answers or see the hard work that you are putting into the site, they can either click the "Recommend contributor" link under your answer, or click the "Recommend" link on your Bio page.
If you answer questions well, you will soon get Trust Points. The more popular the question, the more Trust Points you are likely to receive.

Note

Please do not ask for Trust Points; not only might this deter a contributor from giving you any, but it is alsofrowned upon by the community.
Give them cookies and/or brownies.

Does having trust points have anything to do with giving trust points?

It sort of depends what you mean. You can get trust points from people that you have given them to, but most are given at random and you never have an idea who gives them to you. The people with many trust points that I have given trust points to never knew, unless I told them and then sometimes they would give me one also. The PC answer is that you get trust points from answering questions, But I suspect the greeters get quite a few from the people that are new when they receive a welcome message from the greeters. I know I gave my greeter a trust point even before I gave myself one. However to answer your question you could give trust points to every contributor you see the link for and never get one back. After you have given a trust point to a contributor the link changes to send message because you can only give each contributor a trust once. That is the only way anyone can tell for sure if you gave someone a trust point and only you can see that your link has changed. There are no rules against letting someone know that you gave them a trust point and if you let them know the reason you may find that many people will also give you a trust point back. Some reasons could be I liked your answer to " ??? " question, or I noticed all your contributions to the site, or I noticed ??? about your bio page. That is probably the only method that giving trust points can also get you trust points. Now if you were asking if you need points to be able to give them you don't need any trust points to be able to give hundreds or even thousands. The only thing necessary to give trust points is that you click on the link to recommend contributor.

How can you give or get trust points?

You can give a trust point on a question page by clicking 'recommend contributor' beside their username and current number of trust points. As well, you can give trust points on a user's bio page on the right side of the screen, under 'message user'. The best way to receive more trust points is by writing many quality answers.

Who can give me trust points?

Trust points are earned - for providing quality answers to peoples questions. Anyone can award a trust point to another contributor. Sadly, some people see them as 'status symbols' and not as recognition for doing something useful !

What can you do with trust points and if you have 1 what does it mean?

You can't really do anything with trust points on this website, but, it can show you and other people how dedicated you are to the site, or it can mean that someone liked your contributions. The more trust points you have, the more people start to trust you, even if they are not a user on this site. If you have more trust points, when you answer questions, people are more likely to trust that your answers are credible.
