You can Mark it up as a 13 week initiation ceremony which graduates the leanest and meanest, brightest and boldest, tightest and toughest group of fighting men and women in the World where each can proudly claim to be among the best trained combat force ever known, and where everyone of them can lay the claim to being a a Rifleman first. They are a a part of a long tradition that has served "In every clime and place where we can take a gun".
You have to start out with boot camp.
You must be mentally prepared and really want the challenge. When you arrive at boot camp the group you start your training with will be 10% smaller on graduation day then it was when you began. Most will have failed because they were not physically prepared for the challenge or because of injury or an undiagnosed medical condition.
A three mile run every other day for at least a couple of months will better your standing, but only if you are improving your time every day and are capable of humping that distance carrying at least 40 pounds on your back. The Corps will teach you what you need to know to be a success, but first you must earn the right to be called a United States Marine.
Prepare your self physically. RUN RUN RUN and run some more. Practice on your specified branches vocabulary. learn the ranks and general orders. unless you have a drill instructor at home, you cant prepare for that. each drill instructor has his own little mind games he'll use on you. don't practice shootin unless you know the right way. theres no such thing as the Armies way or Marine way of shooting. theres the right way and that's what the shooting instructors will teach you.
Everything you will need will be provided by your service when you get there. Only pack what it will take to get you to your duty station- one change of clothes, a wristwatch and a basic hygeine kit. You might also want to take a journal and a bible (religious books are the only books you can have). About $40 is all you'll need to have on you, so don't take a lot of money.
Do not take a camera, radio, or any other electronics. You won't need them, and the instructors will just take them up. Don't bother taking any sentimental items, either. If they aren't confiscated, they are just as likely to get lost or stolen. Just think of the bare minimum of survival. The less you can pack with you, the better.
I went to basic training with the setup I gave you in the first paragraph, and I did just fine. Just remember that in the first week the instructors will take your stuff and lock it up for the duration of basic.
You should get used to running and stop drinking pop/alcohol, smoking, and using any illegal drugs.
sign your name on the dotted line and they take care of the rest
Enlist at a recruiting office.
