Probably the best way is to have it dry cleaned, or, if that's not an option, have it brushed thoroughly, then let it lay exposed to the sun for a few hours. The sunlight should kill the mildew. I would just like to add something for you to try: This worked for a pair of leather pants, it also works on old books. Wrap the item in a plastic freezer bag, or just wrap it tightly and freeze it. I left stuff in for a couple weeks, smell is gone!
Try hydrogen peroxide on your mildew article of clothing. It is very inexpensive (currently less than $1 per bottle) and found in the first aid department. My son's jean shorts caught mildew in them along the waist band. I soaked in vinegar and then tried ammonia. Nothing helped and it seemed to be getting worse. I poured peroxide on them and let them soak while I watched a movie. I rinsed them and laundered with vinegar and my regular detergent. No smell!
If you need to freshen an entire load, use 1 cup of white vinegar. I have also read that Oxiclean will work, but I have never tried it.
Mix a gallon of water and 1/4-cup of soap in the bucket. You can stir the mix around with your hand and the sponge. The mixture should be slightly sudsy. Scrub the cushions with the sponge. You can scrub as hard as you like until you get the mold and mildew stains off. Dowse any remaining stains with lemon juice. Let the cushions dry in the sun. The lemon juice will lift the remainder of the stain out of the cushion using the sunlight as a catalyst.
rewash with you usual detergent and add 1/2 baking soda. sun dry.
I've found that adding a cup of vinegar to the wash removes most odors.
