first of all, you carefully scratch out the flaky stuff (which is actually the mites faeces!) then apply Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to their legs each day, it suffocates the mites, (if the days are hot, it will melt so you might have to do it 2 or even 3 times a day) then after about 10 days the mites should be dead. Throughout applying the Vaseline, dip their legs weekly in a surgical spirit. The average time you can stop doing all this is after 6 weeks, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. But it takes up to a year for the legs to return to normal. Also, it is a good idea to ask a vet about Ivermectin drops which helps (though show them how bad it is first).
They say for the feather footed variety don't apply Vaseline as it makes a mess of the feathers and just use the spirit and/or the Ivermectin. But I don't worry about that, the Vaseline does a very good job, so I always use the Vaseline, feather footed or not.
