Melt it!
Yes. Anytime from October through April. The South Rim in particular as it's elevation is about 6,000 feet plus.
The South rim is open year round. The North rim is closed October - May. The North Rim is around 1500ft higher than the South rim, so it gets about 100 inches of snow a year, which is why they close. It is too hard to maintain the roads during the winter months.
The North Rim has a greater elevation and receives more rainfall and snow.
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon typically receives about 60 to 70 inches of snow annually, primarily between late fall and early spring. Snowfall can vary significantly from year to year, with some winters experiencing heavier accumulations than others. The snow adds a unique beauty to the canyon, contrasting with its red rock formations. However, snow is less common at the bottom of the canyon, where the climate is much milder.
The rims in the Canyon are about 2400 meters above sea level, and can get quite cold during the winter season. The all time record for GC Airport is -29 F (!) but that was during a freak cold front. Freezing temperature occur every winter at the South Rim, and the North Rim closes for months each winter, due to heavy snow.
Yes, it is uncommon for Canyon Country, California to receive snowfall due to its low elevation and typically warm climate. Snow events in the area are infrequent and usually result in minimal accumulation that quickly melts.

Chorus: Rim rim under the red rock rim... under the red rock rim... Mary a star shines down... down in the ground she lies... under an earthly mound... that's where her spirit lies... Chorus: She was young so fair... cheated and lied you see... (Next verse inaudible) Chorus: Lonely as he can be... riding on endlessly... lonely as he can be... his spirits never dreams... Rim Rim under the red rock rim... that's where to look for him... Rim Rim under the red rock rim... that's where to look for him... under the red rock rim...
