To get followers, you have to find someone who is programed to be a follower, have the right karma level, and sometimes have enough caps. Some times you can only have one follower, but i have been able to get a max of 4 followers (Star Paladin Cross, Sergeant RL-3, Fawkes, and Dogmeat), all at the same time.

∙ 15y agoTalk to them and there should be some dialogue asking them to follow you.
e.g. Dogmeat can be told to wait on the spot or follow you or sent back to vault 101, though when ordered to Vault 101 by the player from the Citadel, sometimes he will just disappear and you will never get the 'Dogmeat is waiting at Vault 101' message.
