I have long, thick, wavy hair so I have felt your pain. I've learned to only use shampoo while in the shower/bath then use a good leave-in conditioner after towel-drying my hair. Work the conditioner through your hair with your hands then brush/comb as usual.
Another option is to use a detangling spray; you can find these in the hair care products aisle at your local convenience store.
If it gets very bad, you can go to a hair salon and have the hairdresser either work all the knots out for you or just cut them out and start over with shorter hair.

No that's the way I brush my hair I rarley get any tangles if the hair is thicker if might be a bit harder but I can imagine it being easier if it were to be thinner hair.
