First the car has to be in drive in order for the ashtray to open fully. Once open, pull it straight up and out by the wood trim. When the car is in park it will not work as the shifter is in the way.
If there is a drain plug (some have) just open and re-fill doesn't have a filter If no drain plug drop transmission pan, change fluid filter, clean pan and install a new gasket
If you're talking about how the ashtray won't close, as was the case with my car, it's a really easy fix. Inside the ashtray there is a blue 'L' shaped hook that hangs on a hinge. When the ashtray closes, the 'hook' on the 'L' grabs the ashtray so it won't open again. Then, when you push on the ashtray, the hook is dislodged and it is allowed to open. In my car (a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee) the ashtray wouldn't close because the hook came off. All you have to do is pull the ashtray all the way down (gently so it won't break), find the hook, and insert the hook back into the position (it is an obvious spot on the right side of the opening.) Ensure that it is allowed to slide up and down. If you've done this correctly, you should be able to close the ashtray again.
If your ashtray is stuck closed use a thin flexible putty/spackling knife with tape on the edge to prevent scratching and slide it into the one side of the ashtray and gently pry it open. You may have to try each side before it opens. I tried banging it pushing on it and banging on the console around it and nothing worked until I use the putty knife. It will probably still stick after you open it but at least you can get what you need out of the ashtray.
It is behind the ashtray in the the center console. Just open the ashtray door and pull. You'll see it in plain sight.
type in the following question to find out: when does thunder mountai open up?
Open your ashtray grip your fingers under the black bezel that raps around your stereo and AC controls. Now pull bezel from where your ashtray is it will pop out then work your finger in to the top there are 4 clips that hold it in place 2 on the bottom and 2 at the top left and right side be gentle with it. There is no screwdriver needed to remove bezel but you will need a phillips driver for the stereo. This is for a 2002 KIA OPTIMA. Mine is a SE V6
pop up the lid, with the lid in the open position gently push down on the top edge of the lid that is facing you. The ashtray then pops up and you can then remove it, easy peasy.
open the ashtray. gently pull it out and voilá! an OBD-2 port :)
When you open the ashtray compartment, push down the top lid on the ashtray halfway and hold it with one hand and pull it straight up and out by that middle cigarette holder with your other hand.
The ash tray mechanism is strange and fragile.I fixed mine by purchasing some small springs at Home Depot (they come in a variety pack of sizes). I simply attached a suitable one to the rear of the ashtray (no glue, just hook it over the back edge of the ashtray) and it will work fine.
