VLC player can be used to open and play .mkv files. VLC player is a free, open-source media player for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, that can play files of almost every format.
If you want to play mkv files on other players, you can convert mkv files to other format.AVI format is recommended.To do this, I use Daniusoft Video Converter, it is a professional tool.
Just a side note : I just wanted to let you know about moovida it plays all file types Mkv.ogg.avi.mp3 ect...... With no need for Codecs.
It arranges all the media files on your computer in to its slik an easy to use data base while adding additional information to them such as for movie file it adds fan art an a synopsis, which i personally find really helpful.
