You can obtain wire from the Mechanic for 5 Silver coins. To get the Mechanic you must rescue her from the dungeon (You must have beaten Skeletron to enter) after she is killed or you go to far away from her she will find an empty house in your village/tower/castle/etc. and then you will be able to buy several mechanical and electronic objects including wire.
One tip is to buy the Wire Cutter from the Mechanic as soon as you free her. There are many traps in the dungeon, equipping the Cutter will not only let you see their wiring, but will also let you strip it away to disarm the traps and reuse the components yourself.
