From my research, a "frog style" is simply a loose braiding.

If you have never made a braid in your hair, you might want to practice first on a small section of hair near your face. You can try looking in a mirror, but seeing it in the mirror is not the same as when doing it yourself. So try braiding without looking in the mirror, first.

Section off a portion of hair. Make the part line with a comb--- making a nice line also takes practice. Also, if you have medium to thick hair, you need to make the section smaller (narrower) than for thin hair, because it is harder to braid thick hair. Every time you cross hair, the braid will be 3x thicker than your natural hair looks without the braid.

Normal braiding

You will need:

  1. brush
  2. comb
  3. tiny rubber bands, thin ones, or "gum bands"
  4. a few bobby pins--or a friend
  5. patience
  6. practice

After parting and sectioning off your hair, run a comb from the top to the ends. This requires you to hold the section in one hand, comb down to your hand, then move your hand up to grab the section higher, and comb through the rest.

Next, near your scalp, use your fingers to separate the "section" into 3 mostly even pieces (none thicker than the other). This requires you to place your fingers so each separation remains separate.

A braid can be "over" or "under", meaning, the first separation can go over/under the next separation. Whichever way you pick, you must do it that way throughout.

So, holding the 3 "separations" between your fingers/right hand, take the one furthest from your face and put it "over" the middle separation of hair (so the tail of it is "behind" the rest). Always keep the separations separated as you work. Take the one closest to your face and put it over the centermost one. In normal braiding, the crossovers would be tight and held tightly as you work. You will notice, of course, that 1,2,3 separations "change positions" as you braid. Just keep mentally picturing each one before you started.

Continue crossing, alternating between the two separations of hair, so one is always going over the "new-middle" separation. If you have long hair, it can be difficult to keep them separate-- use your hand to move down between them to separate them after each crossover.

On long hair, if your arms get tired and you need a break, slide a small piece of cardboard cut to a thin width under the section of hair. Carefully make sure the separations are separate and bobby pin right below the last braided piece -- bobby pin it to your scalp. (OR have a friend hold right at the last braided piece.) Rest your arms; shake them till they stop aching. Then, remove the bobby pins and cardboard, careful to keep the separations apart from each other, and continue braiding.

Eventually, you will reach the end, where you cannot braid any further. Apply a tiny rubber band (gum band).

Frog Style

Frog Style primarily means that each braid will have a puffy look, rather than tightly braided. Besides puffy, your main goal will be to make each puffy portion look the same as you braid. Some hairdressers finish the braid, then use the handle of a rat tail comb to lift each portion of the braid until it looks puffy.

Cautions about braiding

  1. Expect to make mistakes. Often, new braiders need to stop, undo their braid, and try again.
  2. One mistake is that one level of the braid will be too loose, another too tight. Braids can "come apart" if too loose.
  3. Fly-away hairs can be a problem. Solution: Have a small bowl of water in front of you, and as you braid, dip your fingers in the water to smooth the hair as you work. You can also lightly mist using a spray bottle (set to mist) and use your hand to smooth the hair.
  4. It's easy to get confused about which one of the 3 crosses over next. It won't look right or hold if you cross the wrong strand. I once used the same strand! It looked like I "twisted" that strand.
  5. Be patient and go slowly as you practice. I wore braids for school 5 days a week for 2 years. Plus, I had hair to my rear end and it was very thick! My first braids were messy and terrible, but with practice, I soon could do braiding in my sleep.

How do you get hair like Merida off of brave?

It really depends on the texture of you hair. But if your hair is naturally curly then It would probably be a lot easier to achieve that specific look. On the pictures of Merida it seem to look like some of her hair is teased and some is curly. So I would think that if you teased and curled your hair like hers it would probably look like hers. And another thing, To get a specific style to your hair, you should probably think about if your hair is thick enough to complete the style. If your hair is very thin you probably wouldn't be able to do it because by the looks of it, it seems as if her hair is very thick. People with thin hair would probably have little to luck doing this style.
