If you're speaking of in your own garden, distract your dog while you clean it up. If you're out walking, let your dog have a sniff and then tug the leash to move your dog away before the pet can make a meal of it. Your dog shouldn't be in a position to be wandering the streets unsupervised; eating other dogs' poo is the least of your problems if that is happening.

A dog eating poo isn't a pretty sight, but it really is no great drama unless you let your pet lick your face, which you shouldn't do in any case. Eating a bit of its own poo is nothing to other things your dog might sniff, chew on or roll in that you mightn't know about.

Gently discourage your dog from licking people's faces, keep your dog in your yard unless leashed, and clean up its poo if you are bothered by it either lying around or being eaten.

It's easy to teach your pet to use only one part of the garden as its toilet, which is useful from several points of view: the faeces are all in one place, making them easier to clear away, and you're less likely to step on them if you know where they all are.

Teach the dog to use one area by observing closely when it appears ready to defecate. Take it into the garden area you'd like fertilized, on its leash and praise it enthusiastically when it does the right thing. It is helpful to move some faeces to the toilet area you've chosen, to help your dog get the idea. If your dog isn't ready to do the right thing, or can't wait and does it in the wrong place, just ignore it. Don't tell it 'no'; simply save the praise for when it adds to the collection in the correct place.

Don't try feeding your dog various things in the hope of making its faeces taste too bad to eat: you could be causing problems worse than the one you're trying to fix.
