You need to talk to the girl outside it, who will ask of you to prove that you can do magic to get in. If she want's you to do a spell you don't know, she will teach it to you, and if you perform it, she gets impressed and will open the gate for you, where you can start your life as a mage. For me, I needed to create a ball of light, and I did so, but nothing happened, but that was because I had to make it on the eye symbol in front of the woman. So if it's not working for you, make sure you try that.

No, not in less you join the college of winterhold but like the companions you just use whatever you like and with the dark brotherhood you don't need to but if you would like to use the illusion spells it would help a lot but you don't need to and if you are going to be a thief use illusion spell and go to the whispering door and do its quest so you can get the ebony sword i think its the most power full sword but you have to be lvl 30 to get it
