1. take off your pants and underwear

2. spread your legs apart

3. hold the bottle about a cemimeter below where your pee comes out

4. using your other hand, use your first and second fingers (or your first finger and your thumb) to spread apart your labia (lips)

5. pee into the bottle

Men usually use a container called a urinal. This small container is typically a square or roundish plastic 'bottle' with a lid that's attached to the bottle with a strip of plastic. The container has lines on it, marked in cc's or ml. The bottom is flat so it can stand up, or the flat area is on one side of the length of the container so it can sit on the floor without spilling.

When a man urinates in a toilet, he holds the penis (or it could jerk) however it feels comfortable for him. He uses a similar hand positioning to urinate into a urinal. However, most men only insert the head of the penis into the opening of the urinal, though as a nurse I saw some men who held the opening of the urinal several inches away from their penis (if their aim was good). The man snaps the lid back onto the container when done. The same process is used if another person (nurse or male orderly) must assist a man to use a urinal in a hospital or nursing home.

The same method would be used whether it's into a bottle, jar, can, or bucket. Obviously, it's best if the container has a wide mouth (opening) and has a lid that screws on or clips on tightly.

If a man is doing a medical test, such as a 24 hour urine, or a Clean Catch, the nurse will give directions.
