In a microgravity environment, using the toilet can be a serious problem. Current toilets use air flow to help solid & liquid wastes go where they're supposed to. This doesn't always work.
Before the shuttle era, going to the bathroom in space meant tubes, and plastic bags. If the current space toilet ever malfunctions, you can bet that there are more bags on the space station to be used in case of emergency.
