Toes can be problems when stubbed and injured. For broken skin, simply put A&D ointment on it with a Bandaid.

Whether stubbed or broken, doctors do very little for toes. You can firmly tape the hurt toe to its neighbor-- but not so tight that it swells around the tape! If it swells, loosen the tape.

Make sure to use ice during the first 72 hours. Wrap the ice in a towel, on for 15 minutes OR take it off if you have pain, throbbing, or the skin changes color. You can reapply several times a day. Elevate the foot on a pillow. Try to stay off it for the first 24-48 hours. If you cannot walk then, it is likely broken BUT all the ER will do is X-Ray and tape it.

Note: Whether stubbed or broken, the toe can have considerable bruising. It should go away within 5 to 10 days.

Prevention: Wear shoes in the house. Shoes must cover the toes--no sandals or flip-flops.
