Well you have to be really gentle. You have to make a little gap between the 4 fingers so their legs can get through, then get your other hand and cup it. Put it on the chick and your DONE.
Yes, it is perfectly OK to pick up a newly hatched chick and hold it. They are delicate and cannot be played with much but cuddling it in your hands and allowing it to walk on your lap will not harm it at all. Mother hens do not reject a chick because it may "smell" like a human from your touching it.

to protect the developing chick and hold it as an incubator
That depends on two things: First of, if it's a baby chick, it may try to peck you. To hold it without it pecking you, and with out hurting it, gently wrap your hands around it from the backside. Make sure your hands are low enough so that it can't peck you. That's how you hold a baby chick. The Second reason is if your talking about a person "chick". This might pose some problems. Also, if your a guy and you don't know how to hold a "chick" or girl, that's pretty much a problem for you. Dating tip: if your dating a girl, and your really sure about her and that she won't mind, walk up behind her and gently put your arms around her waist. She'll most likely like that.
no he is not dating he is looking for that ride or die chick someone to hold him down
