Red Hook, in an earlier time, was actually known as Hardscrabble for a short time, and was actually a part of the current town of Rhinebeck, NY, a 15 minute drive away. When it had it's first inhabitants, it didn't have many. Rhinebeck allowed the town to exist under it's boundaries. But as the time grew, Rhinebeck saw that that part of town was growing bigger. Rhinebeck decided to split off this part of town, for Red Hook to be established. It's name is derived from Roed Hoock, the Dutch name for Red Hook. When the Half Moon went past the area, the island was turning autumn red in color for it's dense growth of sumac and Virginia creeper plants. And since the island Henry Hudson found nearby the town was hook-shaped, it got it's secondary part of its name.

Yes, but one thing that you would have to take into consideration is how much the ball hooks in the last 12-20 feet of the lane, or the part of the lane that oil is not placed on. A slowly thrown ball that looks like it is hooking good for the first 40-45 feet will hook more once it gets to the section of the lane that doesn't have oil on it. A faster thrown ball does not have to worry about an extreme hook of the ball at the backend of the lane like a slower thrown ball does.
