Marine hermit crabs need both fresh and salt water in different containers. The fresh water should be chlorine free. The salt water cannot be table salt. It is a special salt purchased at pet stores. You can purchase it premixed in bottles, or buy the salt dry and mix it at home. They will drink the right amount of each to regulate themselves.

Can a whelk eat a hermit crab?

Yes, a whelk can eat a hermit crab. Whelks are carnivorous marine snails that prey on various invertebrates, including crustaceans like hermit crabs. They use their specialized radula to drill through the hard shell of the hermit crab to access its soft body. However, the likelihood of this occurring depends on the size and species of both the whelk and the hermit crab.

Do saltwater hermit crabs have an exoskeleton?

Absolutely. Marine hermit crabs (saltwater hermit crabs) also, like the land hermit crab, have a soft abdomen that is not protected by a hard exoskeleton, so they scavenge shells from snails as they grow to wear for protection. The marine hermit crab will also shed it's exoskeleton as it grows. This is a very fast process, taking only a few hours to a day compared to the molting process of the land hermit crab, which can take several days to a few months.

What is the habitat of a hermit crab?

How did the hermit crab gets its name?

It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. The hermit crab actually loves being with other hermits. It is called hermit crab because it is only one hermit crab in the shell. It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs.
