Yes. Prior to the release of Sketchup 7 there wasn't a way to do this. However, Google released a free patch to import CAD files into SU7. Although this patch will work with most versions of SU, it was only released the one time. Unless you can find it online somewhere, you are out of luck.
The 3-D models for Google Earth are created with SketchUp Tool. To display 3-D buildings you only need to enable the 3-D buildings layer. You can find other 3-D buildings in the Google 3-D Warehouse and import them as KML into Google Earth or create your own with SketchUp.
