I'm assuming that your truck has the fuel injected four-cylinder. If it has the V6, forget about it. First, make sure you don't have a check engine light. If so, pull the codes and fix whatever is wrong. Then, check your O2 sensor, spark plugs, wires, Throttle Position Switch, etc. Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. Basically a thorough tune up. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Get a front end alignment. Don't drive around with hundreds of pounds of stuff if you don't need to. Keep your tailgate closed, don't use a net or bed cover, they don't improve mileage. Drive slower, accelerate gently, don't use your brakes if you don't have to. If your truck is four wheel drive, don't drive around with the front hubs locked. If you have auto locking hubs, replace them with manual locking hubs.

For a 2wd pickup, you're looking at high 20's, low 30's for mpg

For a 4wd pickup, you're looking at high teens, low 20's

Those numbers assume you've got a manual transmission. A little less if you've got an auto.

There are some really expensive modifications you can make. I've seen a pickup that had the engine rebuilt and modified for economy with a different camshaft and many other changes. It had a carburetor and was tuned for economy. You could also change the rear axle gears to a numerically lower ratio, but you would loose driveability and if you go too low, the engine will be working harder and sucking more fuel.
