Architecturally a dado is the lower part of a wall. A dado rail or chair rail was fixed to the wall to prevent damage caused by furniture. Usually a piece of moulded or decorative wood affixed around the perimeter of the room at about 900 mm from the skirting board or at such a height as to prevent scuffing. by chairs etc. Now mainly used as a decoration only
