USB Modems are usually what are known as Softmodems, which are modems with minimal hardware capacities and as such use the host computers CPU and RAM to perform tasks, another common name for these kinds of modems is "Winmodem", which is reference to the fact that they are built to be used with the Windows operating system and are largely unsupported by other operating systems.
It is highly dependant on what kind of Winmodem you are using as to wether it can be installed under a Linux environment. The site http://linmodems.org/ has a collection of walkthroughs for installing different winmodems, although if I were you I'd just buy a router instead.
You can add internet connectivity buy purchasing a USB Modem, PCMCIA Modem
Yes it does. It can be in the form of a PCMCIA slot wireless modem or a USB wireless modem.
Is there a router that you can plug a laptop modem into so that I can get internet on my desktop also. The desktop would need ethernet and of course the laptop is usb. So is there a router out there that can do this?
laptops and computers dont come with modems. They come with wireless adapters that are essentially the same for both laptop and desktop, that can connect to modems. If you have a purchased usb modem for your laptop, that is what is accessing the internet. If you do not, the modem, say at Starbucks, is accessing the internet for you...and you are connecting to it.
You buy a wireless router, wire the desktop and router to the modem, and use the laptop by getting a wireless card or usb wireless adapter.
You will need to purchase and install an adapter and attach it the the USB connector located on the motherboard.
You can install them the same way as all other hard drives to your laptop. You can put the CD into your laptop and install it or you can put in the USB cord and install it like that.
The USB Modem is a plug and play device, small in sizes, can be easily carry out anywhere and no additional power is required to use this USB Modem. Just plug the device into your PC or laptop, it will be automatically detected and installed in your PC and you are ready to go! It works almost like other USB Internet Modems in the market.
A USB modem plugs into your USB port.A "normal" modem plugs into your RS232 port or your parallel port.
put a usb in your laptop and transfer your ethernet file to the usb then place it where ever you want to have ethernet
Through usb port, not sure of the configuration settings though sorry!
No. If your laptop does not have the port required to use the modem and at the very least has a PCMCIA card slot, you must buy the necessary PCMCIA card, such as an ethernet adapter, assuming your cable or dsl modem uses such a connector. There is now this USB LAN (try goggling the image) adapter where you can connect the modem's cable to your laptop, It's cheap, handy and it works just fine.
