Rod and reel combinations have several ways that they are fastened to each other. Salt- and fresh-water reels typically fit in a reel seat by having the lower tab put into a slot. The reel nut is then lowered by screwing in in the right direction to secure it over the upper tab of the reel seat.

Cork rods have cork-based tape wrapped around the bottom of the rod. Reels are fastened with reel clamps. A half-circle fits behind the rod, the reel sits on top. Long screws are run through the clam into the reel seat. Alternately, hose clamps are used to secure the reel foot to the reel.

In some inexpensive fresh-water rods, a nut and bolt fit through a flat plate. The reed is put into a slot in the reel, tipped into placed, the flat plate is put over the upper reel tab, and the screw is turned to secure the reel in place.

Fly reels are mounted on rods using broad rings that pressure-fit in place over the upper or lower reel foot, depending on how the reel is mounted on the rod.

Onmostfishing rods (spinning rods) the the reel isattachedto the rod through the reel seat. At the top of the reel (where the reel joins the rod) you will see the foot of the reel being held held on onto the reel seat with two large crew caps on the fishing rod. To remove the reel loose the screw caps until there is enough room to remove the foot of the reel from the reel seat.

First of all, take all the old line off.

IF it's a spinning rod you need to respool you should get a warm bucket of water and drop the spool of monofilament into the warm water (or hot works fine). Then take the free end of the line from the spool and string it from the top guide down to the spool. Open the bail and tie the line onto the reel. Then apply tension to the line and start reeling until the line is about 1/4 inch from the lip of the spool (I leave 1/8inch). Then you're done.

IF its a conventional reel you do the same thing, but if there is not levelwind to evenly lay the line on the reel you must reel with tension and use your fingers to lay the line evenly to about 1/4inch within the lip. And you're done! Hope this helps. Dan

The easiest method is to get a metal coathanger and some duct tape. Straighten the coathanger and tightly tape the end of the cord to the end of the coathanger. Proceed to thread it thru the pole.

Not the rod, but the reel. The reel is fixed at one location on the rod. It winds the fishing line around the spindle of the reel as you "reel it in".

Why are rods important for fishing?

because they help you reel in the fish Actually it is the reel which helps to reel in the fish. The rod is important because there is more than one type of rod and some are better for certain types of fishing, eg surfcasting rods for fishing off the rocks. It depends mostly on what fishing you want to do.

Can you put normal fishing line in a fly reel and use it for normal fishing?

It's possible but the reel and rod are not made to handle the stresses that monofilament fishing line will put on the gear. The drags on a fly fishing reel are not as robust as a conventional reel.

Which fishing rods are for starters?

The easiest for starters would be a spinning reel and rod. Spinning reels take little time to get used to. But also make sure you get a reel and rod that can match what you are fishing for. Example- Lightweight spinner if you are fishing for panfish, or any other small fish. Example- Bigger, heavier spinner and rod if you are fishing for larger fish such as northern pike, bass, etc.

What is a bait-casting reel in simple terms?

A bait caster is a type of fishing reel. The other two common types of fishing reels are the spinning reel and spincast reels. The baitcaster reel has the reel and the guides of the on the top of the fishing rod (as does a spincaster rod and reel). The baitcaster reel is the most difficult to learn how to use but generally casts farther and has a better drag system for handling larger and more powerful fish.
