How do you replace an accelerator cable on a 1970 VW bus?

Remove the splash pan (under front of bus). Remove the remains of the old cable, take a look at how it's connected to the carb. Rub graphite lube (or whatever you like) and push the new cable through the tube the old cable came out of. You push the new cable from the front of the bus to the back and it will emerge in the vicinity of the carb. Go inside the bus and wedge the pedal in the full back (up) position. Thread the "s" shaped hook through the hole in the bottom of the pedal mechanism below the bus. In the engine compartment, pull the cable end through the lead plug that fits into the carbs throttle..put just a little preload against the spring and squeeze the lead around the cable (not too tight just yet). Get back in the cab and gently feel if you have enough travel. If it feels okay, go back and tightly squeeze the lead end connector. Like most jobs, this is easier if someone helps you by holding up the pedal and observing the travel of the the carb, but sometimes it's just you and the bus!

Desconnect the cable on the carbrrator. On the accelerator pedal, twist the bent offset on the cable out of the side of the accelerator pedal and pull the cable out of the housing. Push the new cable into the housing at the pedal and install the offset into the pedal. Be sure the cable has gone through the entire cable housing, including the one through the fan housing. Connect to carb.... Now, wasn't that easy?

Unfortunately I have had to replace an accelerator cable several times (I've owned a 1973 beetle & currently drive a 1977 super beetle convertible). The first step is to get the correct replacement part. BE SURE TO KEEP THE NUT AND WASHER FROM THE BROKEN CABLE (in the engine compartment side). As far as procedure, I suggest taping the threaded end of the new cable to the severed end of the old cable. You can then pull the cables from the engine compartment. If you should encounter that this is not possible, then you need to insert the new cable (threaded side first) through the opening in the driver's compartment and then feed it through for as long at it will go. You will encounter a point at which it will not go any further. This is where it gets tricky. This is the point at which you will want to secure the new cable to the accelerator pedal (kinda tricky, but it will eventally fit). Once that is done, you will need to crawl under the left (driver's side) rear wheel and find the end of the new cable (it is not necessary to jack up the car). The next step is to find the opening to the engine compartment (it is usually a long, narrow metal cylinder/tube) (kinda like a straw) and then feed the cable through that opening. Once you get it through the opening, you will need to insert it through the assembly where it terminates. At that point you can put on the nut to keep it in place. GOOD LUCK!

First, block the front wheels and jack up the car. Crawl under on the left side and find the clutch arm--it's up high on the transmission, just slightly behind the CV axle. Remove the wing nut from it. Next, unhook the accelerator cable from the carb. Then go into the cockpit and remove the pedal cluster. Look close at the clutch-cable hook on the pedal cluster, because the hook has been known to wear off. If that's the problem, you can remove one bolt and tap out the hook, insert a new one and (if the end of the clutch cable is still good) put the car back together. If the hook's okay, the clutch cable's bad. Pull it out. Take your new one and paint it, then grease it up good after the paint dries. Feel around in the hole on the side of the tunnel, and you'll find the clutch cable tube. Start the clutch cable going down that tube, then push it almost all the way back in. Reconnect the clutch and accelerator cables to the pedal cluster and reinstall the cluster. (The cluster also has a pushrod to work the brakes. It's got to go in a hole in the master cylinder.) Crawl back under the car and put the end of the clutch cable through the clutch arm. Put the wing nut back on and adjust the clutch--this takes a while if you've got a new cable. Finally, reconnect the accelerator cable.
