By learning the language of dreams we can gain a much deeper understanding of the messages they send. The most essential point in dream interpretation is to recognize that you, the dreamer, hold the key to its meaning. It is your dream and the message it carries is for you. By training yourself to record and interpret your dreams, you can become your own counsellor or therapist, and can use the messages you interpret for guidance and insight. Images in dreams force us to think about things when we're awake. The mind substitutes objects and images that are symbolic or represent something else. For example, if you dream of a rat at work, the rat may symbolize a colleague whom you dislike or don't trust. The setting of the dream suggests where you need to start in interpreting it.

Think about every element of the dream and write down any words, images or symbols you asscociate with them. Do this freely. Don't force what you think are the right words, and don't let that inner censor get in the way.

Draw or paint your dream, as vividly as possible. You may find you add more details than you thought you remembered. Also this honours the dream and increases dream recall.

Take the dream at face value.

Tell the dream in the present tense. Capture its energy.

As well as looking at how you consider the dream, interpret it from the viewpoint of someone in the dream.

Finally, always keep your understanding of a dream open. New information may come to light, so stay alert and ready to make further connections that bring new insight.
