If this is your first time or the bird is untamed, take it slowly. Put the cage next to you while you while you're watching TV or reading a book. After a few days to a few weeks (don't rush this), open the cage (please take all safety precautions) and let the bird get used to you. Let him climb around or on you if that is acceptable for you. Offer a few treats while the bird is exploring. Birds love to explore, and always keep an eye out. Good luck!

A few basics to when you are doing this or for other events:

~ Don't keep the cage near an air or heat vent. Drafts can be deadly.

~ If you're cooking or applying fragrances, hairspray, etc., don't do it near your bird. Do it in another room or move the bird away.

~ If you're hosting a party, move the bird to a quiet place in another room to make sure they don't get stressed. This can lead to many more problems. If it's at night, make sure you give the bird fresh food, water and cover the cage to ensure that it is comfortable.
