you go onto the groups home page and then there are two little buttons at the top of the page. one is to deviantwatch the group and the other is to join it. after you press join a box will pop up asking you if your sure and stuff and then after u click yes it sends it to the members to approve or decline your request to join. (they almost always approve) and then it will send you a message saying that you have been excepted!
