Most people with head injuries still maintain their hearing abilities and as much as they can't open their eyes, move or speak, they can hear you just fine. The best thing to do is talk to them; tell them things that always interest them so that they can concentrate, otherwise if you talk boring, you'll be soothing them to sleep more. Touch is very important; squeeze theirs hands, run your hands on their hair, faces (skin) at some point they might reciprocate either with a wince or moving their fingers. Its very important to keep their minds active at-least an hour each day, it helps with their recovery.

Should you keep a patient with a head injury awake?

Most definitely YES. If the patient has a head injury, then it is possible that they will have swelling and/or internal bleeding which will put pressure on the brain. If the patient is allowed to fall asleep, then they could go into a coma and any info that the paramedics may need from the patient will not be available and may hinder treatment.

Position of victim for specific injuries?

Position of comfort. Most patients will place themselves in a position that is comfortable and reduces pain of their injuries. Make sure that with a suspected spinal injury you keep the patient from moving.

What do you mentally remind yourself to do when minimizing movement for suspected spinal injury?

Look for TICS: Tenderness, Instability, Crepitus (grinding/grating noise heard from bone rubbing on bone) and Swelling. Above all do not allow the patient to move unless ABSOLUTELY necessary! If the patient complains of a sore neck, head or back, believe them no matter what may have caused them to be injured. Keep the patient awake and talking.

What happens when baby goes to sleep after hitting their head?

never ever let a child lay down after they hit their head, keep the child upright and awake then see a physician.

Should you keep your baby awake if he has hit his head between the eyes?

First you should take him to the hospital. It may be more serious then a bump on the head. Second, keep an eye on the baby, see if he goes unctions. Finally, even if your baby is very tired then you may want to keep him awake just till you get to the hospital. If you let him sleep just keep an eye on him in case he stops breathing or any thing unusual.

What is the priority in a patient with a open head injury?

Shock is a killer in serious injuries such as this.Open head injuries are a big problem because they bleed a lot. How do you stop the bleeding? You can't use direct pressure or pressure points or put a tourniquet around the neck. So you have to keep adding layers of packing and hope a clot will form. Then you have to attend to basic life support - keeping the airway clear, observing how the patient is breathing, and assisting with respiration if it is necessary. The patient will need an IV to start replacing fluids and to counteract shock. Those are the immediate priorities, although many more will become necessary as the patient's condition changes. Patients with open head injuries are usually treated in a Neurological Intensive Care Unit.
