The most effective control for scale on Magnolia trees is probably Dormant Oil, also known as Ultra-fine Horticultural Oil. There are some specific guidelines to spraying Dormant Oil: The temperature should be between 45 and 85 degrees F., humidity under 50%, and no freeze expected within 72 hours. You can only spray the tree once a month, although if you cover it thoroughly, undersides of leaves as well, only one spray is usually necessary. The oil dries quickly and smothers the scale insect.
