They are just looking for an entry point to get inside and they can sneak past the fireplace damper to get in. In this case you have to put in a chimney balloon to stop them from getting in this way. But you can expect they will try to get in through soffits, windows, siding etc as well.
I believe it is food smells especially that draw them into the house. This happens especially in the fall.
