Build a small fire if the nest is actually in the chimney.

But most of the time the wasps are just coming inside the house through the chimney and don't necessarily have a nest in the chimney. They are just looking for an entry point to get inside and they can sneak past the fireplace damper to get in. In this case you have to put in a chimney balloon to stop them from getting in this way. But you can expect they will try to get in through soffits, windows, siding etc as well.

I believe it is food smells especially that draw them into the house. This happens especially in the fall.
