Look at the side of the card, you should see a small black line between two white lines. If the side of the card appears to be all white, it's probably fake.
Another way to find out if a Pokémon card is real or fake is if you bend the card slightly. If it is very bendy, then it's also probably fake. A real card would be much more firm. (This technique is not as efficient as the first one.)

Do you mean Pokemon Trading Card Game Cards? They were invented, or atleast printed in North America in 1999. That's the year the real valuable cards were printed.
Unless you are in China or Japan those cards you have are probably fake. If you know for a fact they are real, they are legal for use with older versions.
