Is the Egg Fertilized?

If you have a rooster in with your hens, then chances are the eggs are fertilized. We collect your eggs daily, keep them cool and humidified. DO NOT refrigerate them.

The rooster should be about one-year-old and you can watch the rooster and see if it jumps on the hen's back. You will know he is doing his job and the eggs are most likely fertilized. You will also notice that the hens are missing feathers in the center of their backs. You can also do what the professionals do: candle them! Hold the eggs up to a strong light. You can make a candler with a good flashlight and a small length of Black PVC piping. You'll be able to see inside the egg. This will not work unless the egg has be incubated by either a broody hen or in an incubator since there will be nothing but yolk and albumen inside the egg. For more information, go to links.

More input from FAQ Farmers:

When the hens first start laying, usually eggs are NOT fertile; however, after a clutch they are usually fertile. You may still be able to incubate and hatch eggs after proper storage if you take them out within four to five days. They are in a dormant mode. To candle, you can purchase a used one (resembles a flashlight) you plug in. You can put it right to the egg without picking up the egg and see results. You need to make sure it's dark when candling. A little trick for a homemade candler is have a flashlight and a roll of toilet paper - put the egg on the other side of tube to candle. Brown eggs are very tricky to candle: (you need a bright light and dark room :). You can't tell if an egg is fertilized by candling unless you have incubated it and it's started developing. With practice you can tell by finding the white spot on the yolk. Fertilized eggs will have a clearly defined bulls eye, unfertilized the spot will have a fuzzy look to it.
The only way to know for sure is to see the rooster mounting the hen. If you are worried about store bought eggs then "no worries mate!" it won't happen, eggs sold in supermarkets are never fertilized. If you have your own backyard flock and collect your own eggs it is possible but then only if you have a rooster with the hens.

All that being said, even I have to use a candling light to verify if the eggs I collect are viable or not.

You can tell a frog is pregnant by observing if she is eating a lot or being lazy. You can also tell because she would be larger than normally. With some frogs you may see that their hole bottom half of their bodies are white, that can also mean it's pregnant. With others you might see that their chin areas are fat which will soon lead to it's belly being fat which as I said before, it means it's pregnant.

How long does a baby frog stay with its mom?

It doesn't stay with it's mother. A "baby frog" is not a frog at all. Female frogs lay eggs that are later fertilized by male frogs. These eggs then "hatch" into tadpoles - the sexually-immature stage of frogs. The mother frogs will rarely meet their offspring.
