How do you know if a person is mental?

It is not always possible to tell if a person has a mental illness. There are some mental illnesses that may not show symptoms at all times. But if you see a person talking to someone who isn't there (and you know they're not talking to God!) that is one possible indication. One mental illness, Bipolar disorder, can result in extreme mood swings, sometimes within a very short time, from extremely happy and energetic to extremely depressed and suicidal, all in one day, and sometimes within hours or even minutes for some. Some more signs of mental illness might be if a person talks about illogical things, like perhaps something like "I'm being contacted by aliens because of my involvement in the death of J.F. Kennedy." This is called a delusion, and many mentally ill people have them. The delusions aren't always THAT strange. One mentally ill person I met had a delusion that her therapist had children, and the therapist told me she did not. But the lady was convinced. I know of a person who was mentally ill who would say that Jesus told her stuff, such as that her children had done some bad thing or other, and she truly believed Jesus told her that they did, and the children had not done those things at all. These are just some examples of what delusional thinking is like. Another thing some mentally ill people experience are hallucinations, where they "see" things that are not there. But hallucinations can also be caused by conditions other than mental illness, so it isn't always an indication that the person is mentally ill.

Unnatural sleep patterns or sleep loss can be a sign. The urge to hurt someone, including theirselves, could also be a possible sign. Daydreaming and rambling on for hours might be a hint of mental stability. Sorry, I do not know very much information. After all, I'm only eleven.
