Don't worry if you think your hamster is dead, many have confused death with hibernation. You can tell if the hamster is hibernating when: 1. Its body temperature had dropped (Its cold) 2. Its rigid and stiff looking 3. Very slightly the whiskers on the hamster will move. The hamster will still have to breathe in its hibernation state. This happens because the hamster goes through a winter numbness. Hamsters like temperatures around 65 F - 72 F (18-22 C). So don't let the temperature in your house drop 15F (13C). To wake the hamster from its hibernation try turning the heat up to a little warmer. Then pick the hamster up gently and thaw him/her out with your hands. To prevent hibernation try putting more wood shavings, so the hamster can borrow deep and stay warmer. Hamsters a very senseitive to the light so make sure when putting your hamster in a cage put it away from drafts and sunlight. (They also do not like loud noises). To thaw it out try stroking it gentley with your hand. Normally hamsters should not hibernate. They hibernate for four/five months.

well since hamsters dont hibernate.... srry. Hamsters do hibernate. While hibernating they will be in deep sleep and they will not be stiff. Hamsters start hibernating if the temperature is below 60ºF . To awake a hamster, add more bedding so they can go under and keep warm, or you can out them in both of your hands to keep warm, or you can raise the temperature 5 degrees every 6 or 8 hours until the temperature returns to about 68-75ºF.

What happens if a hamster it does't move?

Technically it's not hibernation, but they will slow down their body functions (they become "torpid") if the room temperature of the room they are in gets unusually low, but shouldn't just go into hibernation just because it's the winter season. If your hamster reaches this state, in most cases do not to disturb them. Let them come out of it naturally. Golden hamsters become sluggish at about 14C and torpid at about 10C. Dwarf hamsters aren't known to hibernate, and Syrian hamsters should be warmed to get them out of hibernation because they can die if they are in this state too long. Lack of water, and sudden temperature change can cause a sort of hibernation, and this is dangerous. Wake them up, and get them water, food, and warmth. I remember reading a post in the group about a family who put their hamster in the fridge, thinking it was dead, and then being surprised the next morning when the hamster was in the fridge chewing on veggies, as happy as can be! My point is, your hamster might not be dead, just hibernating. Check the whiskers, because on a hibernating hamster, they'll be twitching.

How would you know if an animal is dead or hibernating?

If your snake is hibernating, it will still be moving slowly, and breathing. If your snake is dead, it will most likely not be moving, and it won't be breathing. However, some dead snakes will still bite and twitch a little after they die. This will usually last for a few minutes.
