The foot may possibly be broken if the following signs are observed. Remember that there is no definite sign until an x-ray or scan is carried out.
1. Pain.
2. Protruding bone.
3. Crepitus.
4. Swelling.
5. Tenderness.
6. Redness.
7. Disability of the foot.
With most breaks, you can't tell a break from a bruise or a sprain unless you see significant deformation of the leg, actual bone ends protruding (as in a compound fracture), or some similar, obvious effect. If you see any of these in the leg, stop reading now and head for the hospital. The best way of making this diagnosis is the X-ray. Note that if you suspect an actual break, and especially in the thigh, get this to a doctor. A broken femur, besides being extremely painful, can cause a lot of circulation-related problems, if it leaks fatty, marrow emboli into the bloodstream. In the meantime, ice-pack the site, 10 minutes on and 10 off, to reduce swelling. The X-ray techs and radiologist will thank you.
If you have a compound fracture you can look to see if you have any puncture marks on your leg. The bone will protrude from the skin with a compound fracture. With any other type of fracture look for swelling of the leg or unusual warmness. Bruising will also show up due to blood vessels rupturing around the break. One of the biggest signs though would be impaired movement of the leg or sensitivity to weight.
Try standing on it. If you cannot it's a fair bet you've broken it.
You Get an X-RAY and it tells you

If the leg is broken it will stand on one leg all day or lie on the bottom of its cage. Its best seeing a vet.
It hurts. You can't bear weight on the leg. You cannot walk - your broken leg will trail behind you. The biggest indicator however, is that you cannot bear weight on leg that is broken. There are a number of other allied symptoms depending on how bad the break is and where it's located - which will probably be obvious to you.
The hypothesis of a broken leg is that you fractured your leg.
It's not up to you. The vet knows.
Broken Leg was created in 2009.
