How do you know if it is too dangerous for you to come out of the closet?

Coming out of the closet is a great way to acknowledge who you are, and to start show everyone who you truly are. The benefits to your mental health and self esteem is countless, with statistics showing that open LGBT people report less incidents of depression and anxiety. That being said, this must also be balanced with how everyone around you will react if they find out you are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

It is best not to come out of the closet just yet if the following things are present:

- You live in a highly homophobic area where being openly gay is dangerous or illegal.

- The risk of abuse or discrimination is significant for openly LGBT people.

- You are dependent on your parents and you fear that they will react adversely, depriving you of financial and social support.

- The benefits do not outweigh the risks.

- You do not feel comfortable doing it.

The choice is up to you; no one should force you to do it. Always seek help from an understanding parent, a trust friend or adult and a counsellor. They will be able to help you through this phase and provide you with the support you need.
